Can women have drinks with caffeine during pregnancy?

Home > Caffeine-in-Coffee > Caffeine-During-Pregnancy

Is caffeine during pregnancy and its side effects really that dangerous? If so, what are they?

Thinking of still having caffeine while pregnant? Think again as there are side effects you need to know and take more seriously now that you're having a baby.

A study regarding the health effects of caffeine during pregnancy may help you think twice before getting your regular coffee. According to the American Journal for Clinical Nutrition, the study of more than 7300 pregnant women "suggest that caffeine intake of ≥6 units/d during pregnancy is associated with impaired fetal length growth."

We know you don't want to hear that but we want to make sure that you and your baby are both strong and healthy. After giving birth you may resume your regular morning cup of coffee but right now taking caffeine during pregnancy doesn't seem to be a smart decision.

Caffeine has been notorious for having different effects on the body and there isn't any good news for it while pregnant.

Doctors have been suggesting to limit the amount of caffeine in coffee and other drinks to below 200 mg, which is less than 2 cups a day.

Can you do it? We know you can stop caffeine during pregnancy for you and your baby!

If not, hope the reasons below convince you to.

Here are some caffeine side effects during pregnancy:

Miscarriage

There have been studies that show that caffeine may increase the risk of miscarriages for women who consume more than 300 mg, around two to three cups of coffee, a day. In large-scale Danish study it showed that there was a 59% increase in the risk of miscarriage for women who drank eight (8) or more cups during pregnancy compared with the ones who drank only two.

Low Iron

Iron in the blood stream is very important for women who are pregnant as it supports them and their baby but with high intake of caffeine, iron can actually be reduced.

Birth Defects

There have been a number of studies on animals that show caffeine while pregnant can actually cause birth defects. However, there have been no successful studies on humans but every woman should play on the safe side and try to avoid too much coffee when expecting a baby so as to avoid the side effects.
