Every wondered why ceramic coffee mugs are thicker than teacups?
The main reason for this is because of thermal insulation. To prevent the beverages from cooling up too quickly, the coffee mugs have thicker walls compared with teacups.
Noticed how the bottom of these mugs aren't flat but are concave? This is to avoid direct contact between the bottom of the mug and the surface it's on.
To help further insulate the mug, they're usually made of low conductivity materials such as bone chine, earthenware, glass or porcelain.
