With dozens of coffee syrup flavors, the possible combination for the perfect drink are endless.
The right combination of coffee syrup flavors and freshly brewed coffee or espresso could make you the star barista at home. Then invite your friends over to let them know about your signature drink.
Eventually, your guests will take notice of your wonderful concoction and before you know it, they'd be hanging at your place all the time - sippin' on your coffee. How would you like that?
There are people, mostly coffee purists, who won't like the idea of adding flavored syrup to the coffee though. Some don't even want to add milk to their cup but who cares right?
It's what you want and what makes you and your guests happy. Remember, you are the star barista!
So on we go to learning more about the flavored coffee syrups and what it's all about.
When you enter a coffee shop and look over the baristas' area, you'll see huge bottles with different colored liquid in it and a big pump. These are the flavored coffee syrups that they use to make your Peppermint Mocha, Vanilla Cinnamon Latte and other flavored coffee drinks they have.
Good thing quality flavored syrup companies like Da Vinci, Torani, Monin, Dolce and more have created smaller versions for home use so you won't be intimidated by the size of the bottles if they're the same size with those that are in coffee shops.
When we mention quality, what we have to look for are two things: higher flavor concentration and sugar content.
These two go hand in hand, in my opinion, as what we want is a higher flavor concentration of the ingredient of that particular flavor compared with the syrup itself.
Why? Simply because if you have higher concentration, it would take less pumps from the bottle to reach the desired taste compared with the lower quality brands.
In the long run, it would be smarter to go with the trusted brands as you will get more cups of coffee per bottle.
As for the sugar content in flavored coffee syrups, they come from different ingredients and mostly come from the finest fruits and nuts before it's distilled and made into the final product.
Because of this, the sugar content of each differs. When we talk about syrups coming from fruits, it tends to be sweeter compared with those coming from nuts or beet.
I mentioned that it would take more pumps to make your coffee sweet if you use lower quality brands right? Well, knowing that some flavors aren't that sweet based on its origins or ingredients, it shouldn't be the case for every flavor.
Raspberry flavors, coming from fruits, are sweeter compared with the hazelnut flavor but this doesn't mean that the quality of the latter is less. Yes, you would need more pumps for the hazelnuts' sweetness to take effect but with a quality brand you should be fine.
It would really depend on you how strong you want your syrup to affect your coffee. In my opinion, you should find that balance between the flavor concentration and the sugar content or sweetness of the certain flavor.
As long as you stick to the popular coffee syrup brands, you'll have the right sweetness and you won't be drinking all sugar.
Too much sugar?
There's an option for a sugar free coffee syrup. They have zero calories and made with Splenda so if you're on a diet, this would be a great substitute. Find out more here. (Opens in a new window)

Why purchasing syrups can actually save you money.
Now that you are refining your barista skills, it's time to make you stay there longer. Why? Because it could actually help save a few dollars from your usual habit of buying coffee in coffee shops.
Let's say you spend $4-$5 daily for coffee, that would be around $150 a month or $1,800 a year. You can buy a good espresso machine or a coffee maker for less than $150 and that would last you for years. Coffee grounds would be around $12 per pound, less than $3 for your milk and your syrup which would be around $5.
At the same rate with buying coffee in coffee shops. you could save around half of your coffee expense. And you can even save the environment not using cups from the coffee shops. Now isn't that an extra incentive to stay home and brew a cup of your own?
Things you need to know before buying your syrups:
Coffee Beans - The most important of all in this section. You can't make great tasting coffee without fresh coffee beans. It's just hard to rely on the coffee syrup to make your drink taste good unless it's syrup with a hint of coffee. Now, no one will like your drink for that.
Quality - There are some coffee syrup brands that aren't made from the finest ingredients. Again, better quality syrups will add more flavoring with less syrup.
Quantity- Do not buy in bulk even if it's on a huge discount unless you plan in opening up a coffee shop. Most coffee syrups have expiration dates and you wouldn't want to waste any of them in case you don't like them.
Here are coffee syrups' other uses:
I haven't tried it on sparkling or carbonated water so I can't comment on that one but from what I've heard, it's a great combination. And your kids would love Italian sodas with syrups - less sugar compared with the regular sodas in the market. They're also used for desserts such as cakes, cookiesand so much more.
With dozens of flavors around, the possible combination for the perfect drink are endless. While you're at it in being a star barista, your partner can do the baking and you could have a nice and warm night with coffee and desserts made with fresh ingredients and flavored coffee syrups. Have fun!
