Instant espresso powder is an excellent addition to any dessert that has chocolate

Home > Coffee-Recipes > Espresso-Powder

No espresso powder? Then what can you use as a substitute?

Instant espresso powder or espresso crystals is brewed espresso which has been dehydrated. Besides being a good beverage, it is also a great compliment to desserts that have chocolate since it brings out its real flavor.

Making this powder is quite simple as it is simply the used espresso grounds that are dried and crushed into fine powder. Even with this process, espresso grounds still retain flavor, taste and aroma.

Even if the flavor does not compare much with drinking espresso made from ground beans, it is still a great additive especially to baking or if you just want a quick fix of caffeine.

For those who do not want to crush their own espresso beans and make them really fine, there are some commercial brands of this type of powder in the market.

One product that we suggest is King Arthur's Espresso Powder."

This powder may be instant but it's quite hard to find. Supermarkets have been slowly carrying them lately, but you would have to ask since they're mostly found in the gourmet section and their stocks aren't eye level.

Hopefully you could find this type of powder to bring out that chocolate flavor in your cakes, brownies, tiramisu and also pies.

King Arthur's Espresso Powder Substitute and Online shopping

If you are unable to get this powder and your recipe needs just a small amount of this powder and you feel it's such a waste to buy and look for one then you can substitute the espresso powder with 1 to 1 ½ teaspoons of regular instant coffee, preferably dark roasted.

Instant coffee works but it won't give off that deep roasted flavor unlike the espresso.
