What are K-cups? Is it part of the single cup coffee craze?

Coffee K Cups Image

Kuerig K cups are portion packs that are used in Keurig single cup coffee brewing system. There are also tea and hot cocoa cups for those who do not want coffee.

These Keurig cups contain pre-measured ground coffee and also a small coffee filter. On the outside it looks like a larger version of single serve coffee creamers.

Yes, it's a single serve coffee that a lot of people are crazy about.

Why should you give the K-cups a try?

If you're very particular about mess in the kitchen and easily gets hassled with cleaning then this single serve coffee is great for you. If you also have less time in the morning to grind coffee beans and make yourself a cup of coffee then this is what you are looking for.

All you have to do is find the right flavor that suits your taste and place it in your Keurig coffee machine and after a few minutes you can have your flavorful coffee.

Switching to this type of single cup coffee method may be hard at first especially if you're attached to the drip or French press system, but if it's convenience you really want, you should really consider this. And there are so many coffee K cups flavors to choose from.

Speaking of flavors in the market as Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc., who now owns Keurig, has given quite a number of coffee brand names the license to create different coffee flavors and even some have Kahlua in it.

Besides the Green Mountain K Cups brand, some of other brands that make this type of single cup coffee option are Gloria Jean's, Caribou, Timothy's and more. Take a look at more flavors and brands below.

How do the K-cups work in the Keurig coffee system?

When you place any of your favorite K cups in your Keurig coffee brewer, it punctures both the air-tight foil lid and the bottom of it and while under pressure it forces hot water through the pack down and into your coffee mug.

It does sound simple but the process actually isn't. A single coffee K cup has four main parts that ensure that it keeps the coffee fresh and/or makes the whole process work.

We have the air-tight foil lid, the sophisticated filter inside, the freshly ground coffee, oxygen, light and humidity barrier. This barrier wraps the inside wall of the container and makes sure that the freshly ground coffee remains fresh. An important part also is the filter, as it helps control water pressure, water flow and also extraction time.

The foil lid seals the top and ensures that the coffee remains fresh and no elements enter that would make the coffee stale.
