Yes, the most expensive coffee in the world is the Kopi Luwak (Civet coffee) which sells for around $349.99 a pound. A cup of this type of coffee can cost about $30 a cup in select coffee shops in Japan and the US.
What makes this type of coffee bean so special and so expensive? Was it just hyped up? Well, the main reason is because of its taste and another reason would be because of the process of how it is made.
Kopi Luwak or Civet coffee comes from the droppings the nocturnal Asian Palm Civet. Supply of this type of coffee bean is quite low and the demand is relatively high, making the Civet Cat coffee very expensive.
What is the process of making the Kopi Luwak?

This Civets consume the red coffee cherries, and they usually get the sweetest and the ripest (thanks to its excellent smell). The inner bean of the cherry isn't digested but acquire a unique combination of enzymes breaking down the proteins that typically give coffee its bitter taste in the Civet's stomach.
When the bean is defecated, villagers then pick them to wash then give them a light roast so as not to destroy any of the complex flavors it has.

Buying in the US or in Japan could really cost a lot since it's just being imported into the country from countries like the Philippines, Vietnam and Indoenesia.
So, what's the trick in getting a cheaper cup of coffee? Make sure you put this in your list to do when you drop by Southeast Asia. You can really buy more than a kilo for a very cheap price. Yes, it's not the best of tips but just make sure you do drop by local coffee shops in the mentioned countries.
