Peets Coffee and Tea may have been slower in growing as a company compared with Starbucks but they've got a very loyal following, known as the Peetniks, that keep this company steady and strong.
These Peets Coffee and Tea loyal customers have an active recurring delivery order with them as they just place their orders online and wait for their coffee to arrive at the day they specified. Why are these Peetniks loyal? Simply because Peet's Coffee delivers well - literally and figuratively.
What keeps these Peetniks coming back and ordering again is because when you order coffee beans from Peet's Coffee and Tea, they are both roasted and shipped on the same day, fresh from their artisan roastery.
This is what they call, "Roaster-to-cup" freshness. On top of this, they have great customer service and quality - one of the biggest ingredients in any food and drink business.
The main thing that keeps the Peetniks coming back, however, is more because of their excellent taste in coffee. The secret behind this is in their roasting.
Peets Coffee and Tea roasts their coffee beans six times a week. Unlike others who already use computers, they roast their coffee beans in small batches and by hand.
According to Peets Coffee and Tea, their goal is "to roast as much body into our coffee as its unique origin, acidity, and natural flavor will allow, giving our coffee a deepness that no other roaster can duplicate."
These well-trained artisans who roast their 32 coffees everyday have years of experience under their belts. The Peet's Roasters have a 10 year commitment to the company and will only be considered a master of roasting after three to four years of training.
Peets Coffee and Tea History
Alfred Peet, known as the "grandfather of specialty coffee" and "the Dutchman who taught America how to drink coffee", started Peet's Coffee and Tea as a single store in 1966 on the corner of Walnut and Vine Streets in Berkeley, California.
He moved to San Francisco at the age of 35 from Netherlands and began importing coffee and then roasting coffee.
He really had an impact on America's coffee culture because the original owners of Starbucks, Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl and Gordon Bowker, learned his style through the his teachings. They then took the technique to Seattle and founded Starbucks Coffee in 1971, here they bought the coffee beans directly from Alfred Peet during their first year of operations.
In 2007, Peet's Coffee opened the only "green" roasting in the world in Alameda, California.
Where did the name, Peetniks, come from?
The original Peetniks were loyal customers at our original store on Vine Street, in Berkeley. They came for their morning coffee every day, and christened themselves "Peetniks".
