Travel coffee mugs are for people who love coffee and are always on the go.
It might be over the top that the title of this article is how travel coffee mugs could save your life. Maybe. But actually it really could.
A travel mug can really be a life saver. Let me tone it down a little bit - they can help avoid accidents.
According to McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty Insurance, which compiled a list of the 10 most dangerous foods to eat while in the car, "All the focus is on cell phones, but when we started digging into the stats, we found that eating was a huge part of distracted driving."
What was the most dangerous food to eat in the car? Coffee.
When we get distracted, even for just a split second, because of coffee being spilled in the car or much worse on your lap, accidents could really happen.
How about when we drink coffee and scald ourselves in the process? We stop everything and we forget that we are driving. Our instinct is to prioritize the hot coffee that spilled and not on the road or on the car in front of us.
Here enters a good travel coffee mug to make things a little safer for all of us.
So how do travel coffee mugs help us? Well, we know that there are a lot of people who love coffee and are on the go. We also know that hot coffee can burn our tongues especially if we drive and suddenly stop or hit a bump in the road.
Given these, we should avoid what we can avoid and find ways to make sure that safety comes first.
For people who drive and are always on the go, the best solution is to avoid drinking coffee in the car or at least wait until you reach your destination before drinking. But can we avoid that? Hardly.
So a good way to avoid accidents is to drink only when we are at a full stop. Can't do it? What you can do is get a good travel coffee mug that seals well so that it would avoid spills. Now, that is something we can control.
We should also look for a good travel mug that insulates very well so as to make sure that when we reach our destination, our coffee would still be hot. Knowing this, hopefully this could make you at ease and avoid getting tempted to drink your coffee while in the car.
I hope that I don't sound like I'm connecting this to drinking and driving (alcohol) but the important thing is that we drink responsibly even with our hot beverages.
Let's all be more cautious the next time we drink our coffee while driving. Let's start by considering getting a travel coffee mug.
Now that we know how travel coffee mugs can save us, let's take a look at how to choose a good one.
How to choose the best travel coffee mugs:
Choose a secure lid - The snap on lids can sometimes come off when dropped. I'd take the screw on lids or the ones that can be twisted (stopper twist) since they're more secure and won't leak.
Choose a non-slip wide bottom - It's important especially for those who don't have a cup holder. Getting a wide bottom with a non-slip rubber or texture definitely helps.
Buy a double-wall insulation stainless steel travel mug - Stainless steel are much more expensive than the plastic ones but they provide a much better value and will last for a longer period of time. It would also keep your coffee or any hot beverage hot for at least an hour.
Make sure it fits your cup holder - The normal size of a cup holder is 2 1/2" - 2 3/4" and the height would depend on the car so take this into consideration when buying so as not to waste money and time exchanging it.
Choose the right size - Travel mug sizes are 12, 14, 16 and 20 oz and of course, if you don't drink much you should stick with the smaller ones. And if you have small hands or don't like the feel, you probably should look for another size.
Durability VS Fashion/Aesthetics
In choosing travel coffee mugs, there are people who'd go for durability while other would rather go with style. There are also others who are stuck in the middle. If you are one of them, let me help you decide which travel mug you should go for.
When going for a durable travel mug, you are getting something that would most likely last much longer since it's made of stainless steel and the technology for avoiding coffee spills is much better.
The designs are coming though but the main concern of engineers is durability, safety and how to retain heat. So if you have rugged commute or going to take awhile to reach your destination, going for a more durable/stainless steel mug would be a smarter choice.
Some people don't really like the look of stainless steel and rather have the ceramic look. I must admit that I'm quite impressed with some of the shapes and designs that there are for ceramic travel mugs. The only thing that I can't take with this is that when you travel, the risk of dropping a ceramic mug is much higher.
But if you are only taking short trips or going from your place to the office, then getting a ceramic travel mug isn't such a bad idea. At least you're going in with style.
In choosing, I'd still go with the more durable stainless steel travel coffee mugs and choose a design that fits me right.
